Yummy Cake, beautiful cake platter...

Gary throws pots. And I just had to make this beauty to try out my new cake platter. It is the only chocolate cake I like. Plus I had some sour cream in the fridge. And in this lactose-intolerant family we don't eat sour cream...except in cake of course.

Pottery Recap

So the show was quite an experience. Definitely learned a lot, who knew to put sunscreen on in October, I should've known that, but we both still got burnt to a crisp. Gary was one of very few males to display. Next time we definitely need an indoor booth or a booth under a tent. It wasn't that hot, but it was hot enough that you didn't want to look at merchandise in the sun. I think mostly because of the sun it made us really tired. I was trying to be most pleasant because it Gary's b-day, but by the end I was quite ready to be done.

I thought we would sell all the pots (ambitious me) but we sold about a third, which was pretty good all in all. It was interesting what people liked too, definitely not my same taste, but that okay, I will be decorating my house with a few of my favorite leftovers anyway.

Next time I think Gary will make 1) more large bowls, 2) more sugar dishes 3) more sets of bowls. 4) more teeny tiny pots.

My view from the umbrella.

If you want to see a few cool pots. check out his gallery at the website.

We are in!!!!

Guess who is hosting his pots at the craft show in our neighborhood on Saturday. Three Cheers.

Let me tell you this is really good, because his good wife (yes me) didn't turn in his registration form until booths were sold old, and begged the organizer (4 emails later) to let him enter. Luckily, someone dropped out this week, and she called called me. The details were worked out, and the only crucial info she need on the spot was...Would he like Chicken Caesar or Mesquite Barbecue for lunch.

*note the easel I got for my B-day from a lovely painter who past away.

Background on Pottery

I was very, very reluctant to buy the kiln and wheel, granted it was "the deal of the lifetime" and "would sell for more than we paid for it" according to Gary. But we had just had a new baby, that was quite a bit more expensive than our first baby, and basically we're students still...poor as church mice (as one of my friends says). However, Gary really needed an outlet after the baby was born. He had been doing more than his share of the work, and had been talking about his pottery studio since we first got married. In fact we took a class together when I was 7 months prego with Miss L and my belly would hit the wheel every time I tried to throw. Anyway, I caved into buying this, but not without a fight. I can't say he has a studio, just a spot in the garage.

However, it has become a little tradition on Saturday nights when the kids go to bed, I go out and talk to Gary while he throws pots, and while I never expect to make money with this hobby, at least it may be self sustaining.

My mom says it is cheaper than having a dog.

Hope all goes well this weekend. Pictures to follow.

The first Firing

Gary has rekindled a favorite hobby, pottery. He is quite good at throwing large things. Soon after the baby was born, Gary found the "deal of a lifetime". I was a little hesitant, well... a lot hesitant, but I have turned into the supportive wife. My mom says it is less expensive than having a pet...

Today was the first firing, we were both excited and apprehensive, since we don't really know what we're doing, but Gary read the manual several times and the firing went just as planned, and in two days (when the kiln cools) we'll have more pictures....

The med school art show (where Gary plans to make profits to support his hobby) is next month we'll see how it goes.

The end of the day...and molten hot.
Our new studio...aka garage
